A student was sexually assaulted in her room in Centennial Halls on Saturday, Campus Safety reported.
The Denver police public information officer on-call confirmed that the assault took place between 2-6 a.m. Saturday in the residence hall.
The victim went to the Denver police precinct on University Boulevard. The police then contacted Campus Safety.
The Clarion tried to reach Campus Safety but was unable to reach anyone connected with the case for comment. It is unknown if Campus Safety has heightened security as a result.
Fourth year student Celeste Grover, president of the Undergraduate Women’s Council, expressed concern at the lack of flyers around campus.
“It’s incredibly scary when something like this happens on or around campus,” and people need to be notified, said Grover.
Third year student Barrett Wolfersperger said she too was concerned about safety on campus.
“Where are the flyers? Campus Safety is usually pretty good about getting out flyers about thefts, but when there’s a violent rape” or assault, it appears as if there is no warning for the students,” said Wolferspergers.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the National Institute of Justice, three percent of all college women experience a completed or attempted rape each year.
According to the National Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800-656-HOPE), most rape victims are between age 16 and 19, and 62 percent of sexual assault victims are attacked by non-strangers.
