After attending the DU/St. Cloud State hockey game Friday night, I became a bit confused as to whether DU students go to games to energetically cheer for our team or to enjoy a quiet, comfortable night of hockey.
I was fortunate enough to have a seat in the lower half of the student section, and I felt somewhat guilty sitting so close when I do not participate in all of the cheers. However, there were students sitting behind me that, throughout the entire game, yelled at other students to sit down. I was amazed that at a college hockey game, students were yelling at others to sit down! We have the number one team in the nation, and yet we can’t stand and cheer for our team?
I bet the fans behind me missed half the game, not because they couldn’t see, but because they were too busy yelling at other fans. Why not use that energy and cheer for the team?
If you go to a hockey game and sit in the student section, expect that students will be standing, cheering on the team. You are welcome to stand up and cheer too. There may not be reason to stand for the entire game, but when the puck is at our end or an incredible play is made, it seems appropriate to stand in support.
For the fans that do prefer to stand for all or part of the game, it would be nice if you would actually watch the game and not just talk and giggle with your friend next to you. You can do that sitting down. For the upcoming playoff game, let’s all stand and support our hockey team.
