The University of Denver ski team earned its third consecutive win of the season at the Denver Ski Invitational on Saturday at Winter Park Ski Resort and YMCA of the Rockies Nordic Center.

Once again, the Pioneer Nordic squad displayed another amazing performance in the freestyle sprints, led by graduate student Pietro Broggini. For the second consecutive day, Broggini registered a first place finish after racing a total of four times around the 1.7 k loop.

Teammate Wolf Wallendorf, who finished fourth in the 15K classic on Friday, came in second place behind Broggini.

“This event is very tough to race,” said Broginni. “We do not usually train for sprints, so I did not feel very prepared, but I am happy with the results.”

“In order to compete on the shorter course you must ski a lot faster, which drains more energy than we are used to and causes us to exceed our threshold. It is much more difficult to race sprints than to race long distances. Overall I am very pleased with the team’s performance this weekend,” said Broggini.

The women also were able to score enough points to bring the Pioneers to victory, despite being able to score only two racers.

Sophomore Niina Karvonen took second as she flew down the final meters of the race, while teammate sophomore Karin Camenisch took fifth place for her efforts.

Denver’s alpine unit was also successful on the mountain with four combined top-ten finishes. Freshman David Lamb led the men and finished second in the slalom, giving him his best finish of the season Teammates Ben Kuruvilla and Cain Mahan respectively finsished ninth and 12th in the event.

The women’s team was helped out by freshmen Barbara Knor and Sophie Ormond, scoring fifth and sixth place in the day long competition.
