Have you ever heard the phrase “cheaters never prosper?” Apparently Dave (Devon Swana), Jeff (Michael C. Moronna), and Sam (Jason Segel) never have. These three are the ultimate “Slackers,” scamming their way through college.
For every situation these guys have a way to beat the system, from test taking to getting free beer they can pull it off. Things seem to be going great for the trio and it looks like they’re going to graduate from Holden college, but then everything begins to unravel in a hilarious turn of events.
It all goes wrong when the insane stalker, who refers to himself as “Cool Ethan” (Jason Schwartzman), catches Dave cheating and threatens to have him and his friends expelled. To keep this from happening Dave agrees to help Ethan get the girl of his dreams, Angela (James King).
What ensues is a series of hilarious incidents as Dave and his pals attempt to help the hopeless Ethan get his girl. The real problem arises when Dave falls for Angela himself.
The film is packed with comedy, some a little odd, especially the dream sequences. Jason Schwartzman, who was the star in “Rushmore,” plays the same style of character in this movie. His ability to play a stalker is uncanny.
The rest of the actors’ performances were all right, nothing spectacular, but the chemistry among them worked very well. The script seemed to be a little sub par, primarily when dealing with Dave and Angela’s relationship.
We have all been in situations where our feelings for someone are confused. All in all, “Slackers” is a funny look at college life, and how some will end up doing more work trying to avoid work in the first place.
