Dressed to kill with an attitude and ready to take on any villain.
This describes Ben Stiller’s character in the comedy movie, “Zoolander,” which is co-written, directed and produced by Stiller.
Derek Zoolander, played by Ben Stiller, is an international male model who defends his title of Male Model of the Year for three years in a row. Zoolander’s dreams of winning the award are dashed when newcomer Hansel, played by Owen Wilson, comes into the picture. A fierce rivalry springs up between the two supermodels.
In the meantime, clothes designer Mugatu (Will Ferrell) hires Zoolander to represent his line of clothing called “Derelicte,” but in reality he has other plans for Zoolander. He brainwashes Zoolander into assassinating the prime minister of Malaysia so that the new prime minister can’t implement child labor laws in the country. Mugatu uses these children to make his clothing. Also, involved with Zoolander is journalist, Matilda (Christine Taylor) who assists Zoolander and helps him discover what the villain Mugatu is up to.
At first, Matilda dislikes supermodels and writes a scathing article on Zoolander for Time Magazine, but then she softens up and eventually falls for Zoolander. Jerry Stiller, Ben Stiller’s father in real life, plays the role of Maury, who is Zoolander’s mentor.
The movie was shot primarily in New York City, with scenes shot in Los Angeles. The sets are extremely creative, especially those of the day spa. The rooms are metallic with a combination of white.
The clothing that both Stiller and Wilson wear is interesting and at times very funny. For example, at one point Stiller wears a snakeskin suit with a matching snakeskin suitcase.
Although the movie did drag on toward the end, it contains humorous scenes. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson do an excellent job of playing the role of the stereotypical male model. Their stupidity combined with their gullible natures is extremely funny.
Will Ferrell plays the part of the evil fashion designer extremely well, and his wardrobe along with his platinum blonde hair shaped into an M completes the look.
Christine Taylor’s role is not as dynamic as those of the other characters, but she brings a sense of reality to the movie and is the voice of reason for the audience. Jerry Stiller plays the role of Zoolander’s mentor well and takes on the character of a paternalistic and caring person.
In addition, many guest stars appear in the film, including Gwen Stefani, Lance Burton and Donald Trump. One particularly funny scene involves Zoolander and Hansel competing in a “walk-off” to prove who is the better model.
Overall, the movie is a great way to have a good laugh and some fun. While not being a spectacular movie, it is still enjoyable and definitely worth seeing.
