The Community Action Program sponsored the Fall Volunteer Fair, last week. The fair invited all students to sign up with one of many non-profit organizations. Although many students have busy schedules, many came to the fair and volunteered their time. Most of the organizations were looking for mentors, tutors and work-study applicants. The organizations served children and teenagers ages 5 -17. Volunteers must commit for the whole time that they sign up for. The usual commitment time is a few hours a week for half of the school year to a full school year. The organizations were all educationally based, but did not all function on school atmosphere. Some involved working outdoors and included internships. Outdoor Colorado offered volunteers the chance to work in the wilderness. This organization focuses on enhancing recreational opportunities in Colorado by repairing trails. The Bluff Lake Nature Center provides educational opportunities to students in grades K-4 by letting them explore nature through free field trips. The BLNC needs volunteers to be nature guides, gardeners, education assistants and hold other positions at Bluff Lake State Park. For information visit www.du.edu/cap. The next career fair will be Oct. 17, 3-6 p.m. in the Driscoll Ballroom.
