This week, The Clarion sat down with men’s lacrosse captain, Wesley Berg.

Q: How did you begin playing lacrosse?

A: I was probably just under a year old and my dad gave me a lacrosse stick. I’ve played ever since I could hold that stick.

Q: What was playing competitively like before high school?
A: In Canada, it works differently. There are no school sports, there’s no middle school lacrosse. Everything is club, so I played for the minor association.

Q: How was your high school career?

A: At my high school there was a field lacrosse team, but that’s more for fun its not that competitive. During high school I played Junior A lacrosse for a club.

Q: How did you come to DU?

A: My Junior A lacrosse coach coached Assistant Coach (Matt) Brown and he got me in touch with the program. I also played Junior lacrosse with Mark Matthews who was on the team here at the time. I came out and visited and I loved it. It was a pretty easy decision for me to make.

Q: What is your DU career highlight?

A: Going to the Final Four for the last two years was great. This year we want to go there and win it.

Q: You were recently named co-captain for the team. Will that change anything?

A: It means a lot to be a leader on this team, especially with all the great past leaders we’ve had. I don’t think it will change the way I play or conduct myself, though.

Q: Are there any personal or team goals this season?
A: For the team, we want to win the league, the Big East league and then we want to win the Big East tournament. Obviously we want to make it to the Final Four and win. As for personal goals, there aren’t really those in a team sport like this. At least I don’t set any.

Q: How are you feeling about this being your final season at DU?

A: I’m really excited to get this season underway. It has been three pretty awesome years. This year has more added pressure to win, since it is my last year, but it’s good and it makes it more exciting.

Q: What are your goals after college?

A: I’m going to play for the professional team, the Denver Outlaws.
