While several students flock home to warmer weather with friends or visit family for spring break, some may choose to stay in Denver. Here are five nearby activities to check out during your staycation.
- Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade – March 15
Every year since 1962, the Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade is celebrated by Denverites, with a turnout so large it has been marked as the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade west of the Mississippi River. The parade starts downtown at 19th Street & Wynkoop Street, but you can catch it anywhere along its route while stopping to support local restaurants and bars.
- March Powwow – March 21-23
To celebrate and honor Denver’s rich historical involvement with the American Indian Heritage, attend Denver’s annual March Powwow, which features tribal dancing, singing, storytelling, food, art and more. This 3-day event has taken place every year since 1984. This year, it will occur in the historic Denver Coliseum.
DMNS never gets old, especially with the revolving door of new exhibits being featured. Starting March 20, DMNS will highlight “Jurassic Oceans: Monsters of the Deep,” an interactive experience, showcasing underwater life before we knew it. While you’re there, check out the other temporary exhibit, “Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia,” which is up until late summer and free with the museum entrance fees.
- Cottonwood Hot Springs in Buena Vista
If you’re up for a bit of a drive, Cottonwood Hot Springs is worth the two-hour drive. Enjoy the scenic view on the way up the mountain and give yourself a day full of relaxing mineral waters. Behind the pools, you’ll find a rapid river, perfect for a cold plunge before you get back into the hot.
Operating Monday – Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with extended weekend hours until midnight, day passes cost $30 on weekdays and $34 on weekends. Before or after rejuvenating in the springs, the nearby mountain town Buena Vista has a variety of activities to do.
- Live music in Denver
There’s always a concert to catch. Denver’s concert scene heats up this March with a diverse lineup of performances across the city’s iconic venues.
Indie rock singer Soccer Mommy will take the stage at the historic Ogden Theatre on March 10.
For those seeking a more intimate musical experience, singer-songwriter Bryan Bielanski brings his talents to the Lion’s Lair on March 26. Meanwhile, powerhouse alt-pop duo THE DRIVER ERA, featuring brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch, will energize the Fillmore Auditorium on March 24.
