The Denver women’s basketball team welcomed SDSU to Hamilton Gymnasium last Thursday, falling to the Jackrabbits in a close battle 73-64.
The Jackrabbits jumped to an early 5-0 lead of the tip until DU brought it back to a tie 7-7 with four minutes and 30 seconds to play in the first. SDSU pulled away with a 15-11 lead to end the first quarter.
The Jackrabbits pulled ahead in the second quarter to a 14-point lead with just under five minutes left in the half. The first half ended with SDSU ahead by 10 points, 36-26.
Denver fought back quickly in the third quarter, narrowing the Jackrabbit lead to 5 points 38-33, at the seven minute and 40 seconds mark of the quarter. SDSU pulled away, growing their lead to 17 points with under two minutes left in the quarter, but Denver went on a surge to bring the game to six points, 50-44 to enter the fourth quarter.
The Jackrabbits quickly jumped ahead to an 11-point lead with eight minutes left in the game. DU stayed in it, keeping the score within five to seven points in the last four minutes and 44 seconds of the game.
In the end, the Jackrabbits maintained their lead through the final buzzer, winning the game 73-64.
The sophomore core of Denver led the stat sheet, as sophomore guard Jordan Jones finished with a team-high 21 points and 5 rebounds. Sophomore guard Emma Smith followed with 14 points, draining four three-pointers in 40 minutes of playing time. Sophomore guard Angelina Robles finished with eight points and three assists.
Denver relied heavily on the three-ball, shooting 10-33 from three in the outing, good for a 30.3% shooting clip.
Denver’s next game is on the road this week on Thursday at Kansas City. The game can be streamed on the Summit League Network. After that they play their final home game of the season against St. Thomas on Saturday, March 2.
