Winter and Denver: two words created for each other. November through March is a time made perfectly for studying indoors with a cup of coffee, skiing the Rockies, roaming around downtown’s streets amidst a snowfall and using the brisk temperatures as an excuse to come up with outfits thick with fashion. DU freshmen Gigi Carrier Smith, psychology major from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Julia Murray, journalism major from Darien, Connecticut, proudly teach those around campus the art of layering in the cold, all while maintaining their sophisticated fashion-forwardness.

Smith, who would describe her style as “glamour trash,” dramatically inspired by Rihanna and 2000 Paris Hilton, boasts a cool black and blue theme. Beginning from the bottom, her tennis shoes are from Nike—an appropriate footwear option for an active day on the melting snow-coated ground. Next, her ripped black jeans, from PacSun, are the perfect item to pair with the bright snow. Her shirt is from Forever 21, and her hoodie is from her sister’s closet. Never doubt the potential to make an outfit out of family member’s clothes. Finally, her light blue coat, which brings together the whole sporty-chic outfit, is also from Forever 21.

Murray describes her wardrobe as “baby street style,” and she claims to be influenced by her friends’ eccentric styles, as well as VFiles, a clothing shop in the New York City and fashion designer communities. Her black leather loafers are from the thrift store ARC in the children’s section—a cheaper way to find those little items that complete an outfit. Her pants are from Topshop, and her New York Yankees t-shirt is from her ex-boyfriend. Finally, she got her Rehab jacket from a little boutique, but it can also be found online.
