The Clarion spoke with women’s volleyball sophomore Moni Corrujedo.
Q: Where are you from?
A: El Paso, Texas, but I lived in Mexico too. I was back and forth between the two places. During the week, I would go to school in El Paso and on the weekends I would go to Mexico with my family.
Q: When and how did you get started in volleyball?
A: My dad played for the Mexican national team so [he] and I trained together and eventually I joined the school team when I was 10 years old. I played club as well.
Q: How did you choose DU?
A: DU scouted me, so I came to visit. I liked the campus and that it’s a small university. And the business school is excellent, so it was a great fit for me and what I want to do.
Q: How has the current season been going so far?
A: Since we started the season, we’ve been doing really well as a team. I’ve been working really hard to become a more efficient player and it’s been proven in the last couple of games. As a team, we are doing really well. All the preseason tournaments really helped to prepare us for the season.
Q: What personal goals have you set for yourself?
A: As an outside hitter, I need to be really efficient and that’s my main focus. Also, not erring as much, just focusing on the fundamentals and working hard when I’m tired.
Q: As a student-athlete, is it difficult to find a balance?
A: It is pretty difficult. We have practice and right after we just go straight to homework. We don’t really have time to do social things and every day is a busy day. It’s just non-stop.
Q: Are you involved in other things at DU?
A: I’m involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, or AIA, which means Athletes in Action. We meet every Wednesday and we talk about balancing athletics and academics, our relationship with God, and how we can seek God for help. We pray for each other and our personal problems, too.
Q: Now for a fun question: What’s your favorite movie?
A: I love romcoms! So probably “What Happens in Vegas.” I love watching that movie; it’s so funny. And I like “27 Dresses” too!
