The Pio gymnastics team held the top four scores for three events, and earned season-high scores on every event in the win over the Air Force Academy last Saturday night.
The Pioneers were able to hold on to their home winning streak after defeating Air Force 195.800-192.400. Currently ranked No. 18, Denver has a 3-1 record.
On bars, the team finished with their high of the season at 48.825. Sophomore Rachel Feeken and freshman Julia Ross recorded career highs, both posting over a 9.7. Senior Melodie Pulgarin Linero and sophomore Maggie Laughlin also contributed to the Pioneer’s bar score.
Junior Nina McGee led the Pioneers on floor with a with an almost perfect score of 9.900 and a first place finish. Senior Jorie Hall finished second on floor for Denver, scoring a 9.850, and senior Kaitlin Moorhead and sophomore Katie Menhinick also added to the Pioneers’ total score for the floor event.
Denver scored 48.925 on vault, which tied the team’s season high for the event. McGee competed for the first time in her career with the Pioneers on vault and scored an impressive 9.775. Senior Moriah Martin led Denver with the season high score of 9.900, and also earned Gymnast of the Week honors. Moorhead and Ross also contributed to Denver’s overall vault score.
Hall put up the highest score on beam for the meet, with a 9.875. McGee, Pulgarin Linero both posted scores in the 9.8 range, while Martin and Ross scored two 9.775’s. Freshman Leah Lomonte also posted for the Pios.
Martin and McGee both competed all-around for Denver, each scoring over 38 points for the team.
This Friday, Jan. 31, Denver travels to BYU to take on the Cougars in Utah. Two home meets remain for the Pioneers at Hamilton Gymnasium this season.
