In order to aid homeless citizens throughout Denver, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Sophomore Senator Jess Davidson is sponsoring the “Socktober” charity drive at DU, with the goal of providing socks to homeless citizens.
Currently, there are drop off points for donations in all residence halls, the Driscoll Bridge and in the Pioneer Leadership Program office in Driscoll south. Donations can be made through the remainder of the month. Between USG, PLP and other students, the drive has received 50 plus pairs of socks, and Davidson expects more before the end of the month.
Davidson is forwarding all donations to the Denver Rescue Mission shelter. She encourages students and faculty alike to donate new pairs of socks to be delivered to the shelter.
“Socktober is a national campaign started [in a YouTube video],” said Davidson, “It was about using the power of the internet to do something good by starting a sock drive.”
Davidson said she has found through personal experience that students have been supportive of the drive. She further commented that she believes DU students to be “givers.”
Davidson said that the drive serves an important role in helping the Denver homeless due to the effects of early winters in Colorado.
“On any given night in November, there are 11,167 [homeless] walking through the Denver area,” said Davidson. “That includes women and children, people who are already sick and people who are already having other hardships. To stack additional hard math on that, the average Denver night is 33 degrees Fahrenheit, which is only one degree above freezing. In general, that’s a lot of cold toes.”
