DU students are spoiled by the excellence of Division I Pioneer hockey. That’s why fans are complaining about the 1-1 split with Vermont this past weekend. Some say the game play was sloppy and we were lucky to even win the first league game of the series.
Obviously our expectations are high, and the pressure on the team is even higher as DU came into the season ranked No. 1 in the country.
DU hockey fans are some of the more intellectual, sports savvy fans in the nation. They expect greatness and perfection. I can understand that, but not against a Frozen Four contender last year. A series split in our first game of the season is okay as far as I am concerned.
The season is long, as all of you know, and one loss in our second game is not going to make or break our season. DU has been criticized by other schools and even referred to by its own students as “lacking of school spirit.”
If we are going to become the Crimson Creature and truly believe that statement is a bunch of shenanigans, then lest prove it.
Spirit is not about criticizing and panicking after your hockey loses to a top 15 talent, like Vermont. It is about looking at the progress we made and backing up coach George Gwozdecky and the rest of the Pioneers, like coming back from a deficit to win in the last two minutes of game one.
Perhaps even more important to students than our success as an individual school, is our success compared to Colorado College, and the good news is that CC also split their opening series with Northeastern University.
Oh, one more thing. CC SUCKS!
