Trojan Brand Latex Condoms ranked DU 31st on an annual report card that ranks universities according to their sexual health and education availability.

DU jumped 43 spots from last year’s report. The increase in rank can be attributed to contraceptive availability, HIV and STD testing and information provided to students, according to Bert Sterling, president of Sterling’s Best Places.

Sterling heads the research group that performs the tests for the yearly report card.

“We have a team of myself and four others who have recently graduated from college who evaluated the different 13 categories and that’s how we arrived at the score for each university,” said Sterling.

Some of the 13 tested categories include student opinions of the health center, website usability and functionality, STD and HIV testing, as well as contraceptives cost and availability.

“There is no accurate way to look at the overall sexual health on campuses as far as sexually transmitted diseases,” said Sterling. “So, what we look at is the availability of sexual health resources and information so students can stay healthy and make smart, good decisions themselves while taking care of their own health with the help of the student center.”

This is the sixth year Trojan has released a sexual health report card. Consistently, Ivy League schools such as Harvard, Brown and Princeton land in the top 10, but DU is quickly making the leap to the top.

The bottom three schools in the 2011 report card were the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and DePaul University in Chicago. Sterling is thrilled to provide an incentive for schools to change their sexual health availability around, he said.

“We have seen students using the sexual health report card to address the administration as evidence that they are not getting the kind of care they need to be sexually aware and sexually healthy,” said Sterling. “It is wonderful to be able to have something have such a social benefit.”
