Juniors Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia) and Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) claimed the doubles title at the DU Invitational after going 3-0 at the Gates Tennis Center over the weekend. In their first tournament as a team, Bonin and Vorkefeld defeated teams from Texas Tech, Air Force and New Mexico. Freshman Luke Manley and sophomore Alex Clinkenbeard added another doubles victory against Nebraska. The Pioneers added an 8-0 mark in singles against Air Force.

what went wrong

The Pioneers were unable to claim the singles title, which went to Gonzalo Escobar of Texas Tech.

The Pioneers will compete at the ITA All-American Championships Oct. 3-9 in Tulsa, Okla.

women’s tennis

what went right

DU junior transfer Madeleine Saari-Byström, originally from Uppsala, Sweden, claimed the Gold Singles title at the CU Invitational in Boulder on Sunday. Saari-Byström went 4-0 at the tournament, defeating players from CU, Arkansas and Wyoming. Pioneers Elena Najera and Caroline Schnell claimed the Silver Doubles Backdraw title. Additional singles titles were claimed by Najera and Steffi Rath.

The women’s tennis team is off to a successful start to the season.

The Pioneers will continue their season at the ITA All-American Championships Oct. 1-9 in Los Angeles. DU junior Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) will be competing in singles and doubles with Najera.

After that, the team will travel to Las Vegas for the ITA Regional Championships Oct. 12-16.

what went right

The Pioneers dropped both Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky over the weekend in their first two SBC matchups. Kristen Hamilton, Jessy Battelli, Nicholette DiGiacomo and Bria Beardsley all contributed goals. “It was a good weekend,” said DU Head Coach Jeff Hooker. “We got two wins against opponents that made appearances in the conference tournament semifinals last season.”

what went wrong

The Pioneers have had little error so far this season. After a solid start, the team is looking to continue its success with a goal of 20 wins this season.

The Pioneers travel to Louisiana this weekend for matchups against Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday at 6 p.m. and Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at 11 a.m.
