A sophomore majoring in international studies found a small, angular piece of metal in the last bite of a chocolate muffin he purchased from Jazzman’s last Thursday morning.

“I took a bite and felt something in my mouth, so I pulled it out,” said Armando Duran, the student who discovered the metal. “I didn’t know what it was. I called it a hook, but it wasn’t sharp or anything.”

Duran said he did not have time to return to Jazzman’s that day, but on Monday when he went in to get his usual morning bagel, he asked about it and was put in contact with Sodexo retail manager John McCullough.

According to Duran, McCullough looked at the metal piece and explained it was a piece of a whisk that had broken off when they were making the muffin batter.

He apologized, and said it would not happen again. He also compensated Duran with a card for one meal at Sidelines Pub.

“He was very professional about the whole thing, and he sounded like he knew exactly what he was talking about,” said Duran. “I never felt like I was left out of the situation. I worked in a kitchen. I know mistakes happen, especially when you’re making large quantities of food.”

McCullough said Sodexo does not wish to comment on the incident.

“There’s nothing I can tell you about that,” said McCullough.

Duran said he usually eats at Jazzman’s every day for breakfast, and he will continue to do so.

“I usually get a bagel, but I was running late that day so I got a muffin, instead,” said Duran. “It was just a weird thing that happened that morning.”

Duran said he admitted the situation could have been worse if he had swallowed the metal. However, he said because he noticed the metal before he swallowed it, he thought it was fine.

“Nothing really horrible happened, so I wasn’t too concerned about it,” he said.
