While many students bike around campus and the greater Denver area, most do not wear helmets.
Both REI and Nutcase now offer helmets that are both chic and comfortable.
REI’s helmet brand, Bern Watts, is available in a variety of colors or a solid black. These helmets are breathable and made of hard shell-like material, offering great protection from head injuries in the event of an accident. Similarly, Nutcase has a large variety of helmets with different patterns, including a watermelon design, as well as several solid colors.
While both these helmets are a bit pricey, running between $45-$60, the investment provides the biker with thorough head protection.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, wearing a helmet can reduce the possibility of severe head injury by 88 percent in the event of a crash.
Freshman Nicole Lapinsky describes her reasoning behind her unwillingness to wear a traditionally designed helmet.
“I bike around town a lot and could really use a helmet, because I know it would be safer,” says Lapinsky. “It would definitely be nice they weren’t so hot. So if it was breathable and cute, I might wear it,”
These cute and different helmets are a great option for the biker who is looking for some head protection that won’t interfere with their personal style.
