The two-day elections for two freshman seats on the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) spots end today at 4 p.m.
Voting began at midnight yesterday.
To vote, freshmen should go to the website listed on the e-mail sent out to all first-years.
The candidates are Michael Barkman, Lauren Cudney, Lenny Elsoffer, Sam Estenson, Michael Fischer, J.P. Griego and Brianna Johnson.
In their platforms, many candidates focused on issues that affect first-years, including increased campus involvement, more academic options and bettering dorm life.
USG made the decision to open up committee seats to freshmen this year. Freshmen were not able to sit on committees in past years.
Estenson proposes instituting a shuttle specifically for first-year students to give rides between south campus and north campus, from Johnson-McFarlane residence hall to Centennial Halls and Centennial Towers.
Estenson would work with academic departments to offer simple “semi-internships,” aimed at helping students build resumes.
Estenson also would push for more free DU T-shirts.
“Don’t ask why or how, it’s just common sense that everyone loves a free DU t-shirt,” he said in his campaign platform.
Elsoffer would like to reform the USG elections process so that there will be more outlets for candidates to communicate what they stand for, like speeches.
He also would like to improve acceptance of cultural diversity at DU.
“Undergraduate Student Government could put on cultural dinners occasionally, exposing people to different cultures,” Elsoffer said.
Fischer believes his easy-going nature and approachability will help him develop a strong relationship with the freshman class and the rest of the student body to represent the interests of all students.
Barkman would advocate for grades to be posted routinely on Blackboard.
He also would like to work with the administration to expand freshman options for class selection, so that more first-years do not have to settle for second and third picks in class choices.
Griego wants to increase the amount of Xeroscaping on campus to cut down on water usage. He would also like to extend dining hours and up the local food options in the dining halls.
Griego would also develop an online database for campus events and bring more local businesses to campus.
Cudney wants to increase spirit at DU and up campus involvement among first-years.
Cudney reflected the views of many of the freshmen running when she said, “I really think that the first-years need to be well represented in the student body. Just because we’ve been here for two weeks doesn’t mean we don’t have opinions on what needs to be done.”
