With the cold air blowing in, it’s time to pack away the sundresses and board shorts and say hello to sweaters and boots. Though you may feel like cuddling up in sweatpants and layers, don’t let low temperatures scare you from being fashionable this fall. Campus style is all about fashion and function. Below are the highlights of some main trends on campus this fall.
Boots
If you’ve left your dorm room in the past week, you’ve probably noticed that boots are everywhere. From tall to short, red to silver, there is a boot out there for everyone, male or female.
For girls, check out equestrian boots and rain boots. Equestrian boots are a classic style that can be adapted to almost any wardrobe. They are a naturally durable boot with a leather shaft and wood sole, but make sure to waterproof these boots before wearing them in wet weather and to watch out for their slippery soles.
Rain boots are an excellent backup for days when your equestrian boots just can’t handle the weather. With an enormous range of colors and fleece linings to keep your legs warm, the rain boot is not what it used to be. For guys, try rugged boots. These boots are every bit as functional as they are trendy, and are sure to keep you from slipping in the snow. Timberland makes some great options of this style of boot.
Puffer Vests
A great alternative to a coat for both girls and guys is the puffer vest. This vest is extremely functional, keeping your core warm on cool days. They come in a variety of colors, but remember that neutral colors will be most versatile with the rest of your wardrobe.
Capes/Ponchos
Another excellent alternative to the basic coat, capes and ponchos offer just as much warmth with added style. If you’re thinking of Superman when you read the word “cape,” think again. The cape is a glamorous take on the poncho and more comfortable than a coat. Ponchos are also a big trend and have an earthier feel to their style. Though lighter in weight than a cape, they are soft and perfect for brisk fall breezes.
Flannel
It seems that as soon as the first snow falls, every guy on campus pulls out his flannel. Warm and comfy, there’s no denying flannel’s role in a college student’s wardrobe.
For girls, pair flannel on lazy days with a plain scarf, jeans, boots and great earrings. For guys, flannel goes great with corduroys – another trendy and warm option – and puffer vests for extra warmth.
Blazers
Fortunately, this timeless piece has returned for another season of fabulous fashion. Sure to make any outfit look pulled together, the blazer is a must-have for every girl’s wardrobe and is a quality investment.
Try it with a plain tank, necklace and jeans for everyday wear. For dressier occasions, throw a blazer on over a dress or skirt, add a statement necklace. Then you have a quick, classic, pulled-together look.
For guys, the blazer over a casual tee and dark jeans is always a classic go-to.
Chiffon
Sheer fabrics are a major trend this fall and chiffon fits the bill perfectly. Its transparency adds a sophisticated yet sexy element to any outfit, making it the perfect fabric for a night out.
For daytime wear, the chiffon blouse is a must.
This garment is super versatile, especially if in a neutral color. It adds a feminine, polished look to any outfit and is easily dressed up with accessories for more formal occasions.
