Matthews added to Tewaaraton Award watch list

Senior attackman Mark Matthews was one of 74 NCAA student athletes named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Wednesday by the Tewaaraton Award committee.

The list spans all three divisions of collegiate lacrosse and included the early contenders for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award, and the last time a Denver athlete appeared on the list was 2010 when then-senior defenseman, Dillon Roy, earned a spot on the list.

The list has athletes representing 64 schools, a record high for the award watch list. The selections are made by a committee of the top collegiate coaches, appointed by the Tewaaraton Award.

As the season progresses, the selection committee will add athletes to the list, and in late April, the list will be narrowed down to 25.

In mid-May, five finalists will be announced for each division.  The finalists will be invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on May 31 at the Smithsonian Institutes’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.

Skier pair earns RMISA award after Alaska races

Junior Andrew Dougherty and freshman Trevor Philip were named the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association’s Skiers of the Week after the Seawolf Invite and the University of Alaska Anchorage Invite, respectively.

Dougherty, an Anchorage native, placed 6th in the Nordic 20K classical race and 4th in the 10K freestyle race in the Seawolf Invite.

“Andrew has put a tremendous amount of work into his skiing during his time at DU,” said head Nordic coach Dave Steward. “He has set high goals for himself and has doggedly pursued them, earning a spot on our NCAA-winning team as a freshman 2010, qualifying for World Juniors, earning All-American honors in 2011 and now pursuing the very best in college skiing.”

At the University of Alaska Anchorage Invite, Philip clinched two 3rd-place finishes in the giant slalom and slalom races.

“Trevor raced well despite adverse conditions,” said head Alpine coach Andy LeRoy. “It is good for him and the rest of the team to be at their top level as we head into Montana.”

The RMISA awards the skier of the week honors by adding the two placements of their races together. In the event of a tie, it is broken by adding the combined times together, and the faster time wins.
