On April 2, the University of Denver’s Asian Student Alliance (ASA) kicked off the spring quarter with their boba social.

Attendees enjoyed boba tea, courtesy of Latea, while they socialized, relaxed and crafted bracelets. The boba social allowed people to catch up as the first week of spring quarter came to a close.

“Boba is really popular in Denver. It [the social] was a really fun third space for my friends and I to hang out,” said Jeselle Arita, a third-year mechanical engineering student.

Other students expressed similar sentiments, describing the event as a fun place to be in community while enjoying a sweet treat after a long first week back.

At the beginning of the event, the executive board announced upcoming events, such as their annual eXpressions show, which is dedicated to celebrating Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) talent. This event will take place on April 25. Both DU and non-DU students are invited to participate in this event that celebrates culture and community. ASA encouraged everyone to come out and support this event that showcases local talent and embraces a wide variety of cultures.

Community, a major aspect behind the creation of the boba social and many other events hosted by ASA, is also the theme of this year’s Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together.” This theme is embodied in ASA’s events year round, from their quarterly boba socials, their community-wide Lunar New Year celebration and other events that embrace the different backgrounds of DU students.

AAPI Heritage Month is observed in May, a decision that is based on two key dates: May 7, the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States and “Golden Spike Day,” and May 10, the day the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S. was completed, with major contributions by Chinese workers. While AAPI Heritage Month is in May, organizations like DU’s ASA keep the celebrations going all year round.

For future events, follow ASA on Instagram and join their Crimson Connect.
