Céad míle fáilte! It’s March and St. Patrick’s Day is among us. Happy holidays to all Irish and non-Irish college students who celebrate.
Many college students view St. Patrick’s Day as an excuse to drink Guinness and dress in their finest green shade, however, the day holds a greater significance for those who celebrate. St. Patrick’s Day celebrates the patron Saint Patrick who spread Christianity in Ireland.
There are a lot of “American-ized” ways of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. One being the four-leaf clover, which isn’t traditionally associated with the holiday in Ireland. Instead, those of Irish descent use Shamrocks to represent the Holy Trinity. Symbols aren’t the only thing that is different as instead of cabbage and cornbread as many might feast on potatoes and Irish soda bread.
The United States has a different way of celebrating the holiday. At the University of Denver, students might not be honoring St. Patrick by going to Church, but may opt to celebrate it with some Rattlin’ Bog.
Here are some ways to enjoy the holiday in Denver.
Starting off bright and early on March 14, the Denver St. Patrick’s Day parade kicks off at 9:30 a.m. The route begins at 19th and Wynkoop, goes through Union Station and ends on Blake Street.
The parade is a great way to see various community organizations in Denver while having fun with friends. It is easy to get to and lasts for a long time, so you can either get up super early or hit snooze a couple times and still catch the tail end of the parade.
That same day, Irishfest Denver is also just a train ride away located at Coors Field. If you want to stay downtown after the parade to enjoy some music and good Irish food, you can pay just $10 for this lively event.
On March 14, the St. Paddy’s Day lucky run offers various races in Centennial. The 5k is priced at $40, 10k at $45, and half marathon at $48. With your purchase, you will also get a shirt to commemorate the race.
For some Irish dancing, go to Denver Central Market. They offer food options like Call Your Mother bagels, Italian food, fresh fish market, a bakery and more. If you are wanting a variety of meal options while watching the art of dance, this is a perfect place to be. The location is also great, with many stores in the area if you want to explore after the show.
To celebrate with Guinness, the Denver Bar Crawl may be a great way to celebrate. The $20 ticket purchase includes an assortment of deals for those 21 and older. It offers an organized way to enjoy the day while avoiding the lines.
Hopefully everyone is able to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day around Denver. Think of the early celebration as a break from studying for finals if you are able to, and don’t forget to wear green.
