Singer-songwriter Marie Ringheim, better known as Girl in Red, rocked the stage at Red Rocks on Saturday, May 25 to perform her sophomore album, “I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!”
The opener, “The Beaches”, came on stage promptly at 7 p.m. and got the audience ready for a beautiful night at Red Rocks. A little bit of rain came down during their set, but it didn’t stop anyone from dancing and taking in the beauty of the venue.
Just as the sky cleared up and the sunset began, Girl in Red came out running and started the set off with bouncy energy and facial expressions that set the tone for the rest of the night.
After an energetic entrance, she kept the vibes high as she went into her second song, “bad idea!”
Anyone who had listened to her before coming to the show could agree that her live performance was just as great as her records, if not better. The clarity in her voice throughout the entire set was something that will be remembered by everyone in the amphitheater.
Girl in Red dedicated her third song titled “girls” to “all the gays out there,” stating that until recently, she had never toured with another member of the LGBTQ+ community. The crowd burst into cheers as she sang out relatable lyrics like “no, this is not a phase, or a coming of age, this will never change.”
In between songs, she cracked jokes like “I could cry but I’m gonna save that for later,” expressing her appreciation for the opportunity to perform at one of the world’s best concert venues.
Most of the audience was already well-versed with her next recently released song “New Love,” but they quieted down to take in her amazing vocals.
Taking off her guitar, she introduced her next song, “Body and Mind” which the crowd sang along to in harmony and euphoria.
She made her way to the piano as she spoke to the audience as if they were her best friends. “Holy f*ck I’m really emotional,” she said.
The set continued on, and her energy and stage presence only heightened. She was supported by her backup musicians who also put their entire bodies into each and every song.
She kept the audience engaged by initiating a “self-declared [beat] drop” in the middle of her song “You stupid B*tch” where the entire audience jumped up and down for the remainder of the chorus.
After the jumping ended, she called out a young boy who continued to jump even when there wasn’t a song on. After getting his name and thanking him for the energy, she encouraged the crowd to “be like Dylan” before starting her next song, “Too Much.” Of course, the audience obliged.
From the slower-paced, emotional and personal songs like “a night to remember” to high-energy, mosh-worthy songs like “dead girl in the pool,” and “I’ll call you mine,” Girl in Red rocked the stage all night long.
An inspiring moment of the show was when she read the audience a note she had written herself before the show. It read: “Lost Lake: 150 people…Mission Ballroom: 3,000 people… Red Rocks: 7,000 plus.” The audience applauded her musical progress as she wrapped up the show with “i wanna be your girlfriend,” another fan favorite.
To top it off, she came off the stage and ran up to the top of the amphitheater to mosh and sing right next to hundreds of stunned fans.
Girl in Red’s sophomore album shows the continuation of her growth and popularity as well as her experimental triumphs that added yet another layer to her alternative pop rock discography.
