University of Denver’s 2023-2024 tuition rate amounts to $58,032 per year for full time students, excluding other expenses such as room and board. This is higher than tuition at Harvard University and Rice University.
On Oct. 9, the Office of the Provost sent out an email to the student body announcing a $2,700 tuition increase beginning fall 2024.
“As Provost, I am committed to a first-rate experience for our students both inside and outside the classroom,” Provost Mary Clark said in the email. “With that in mind, and to maintain the highest quality of our DU education, the University of Denver Board of Trustees recently approved a 3.5 percent undergraduate tuition increase for the next academic year.”
This tuition increase comes as DU dropped in the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings from 105th to 124th between 2023 and 2024 .
Some students believe the tuition increase is unjustified.
“I think the tuition is already extremely high [and a] three and a half percent increase for 95% of campus is absolutely ridiculous,” first-year Xander Levy said.
Others are concerned about scholarship adjustments.
“We already pay a lot of money to go to DU. It’s a great institution and it’s already well funded by alumni,” first-year Sofie Gottchal said. “I feel like the fact that it’s an extra $2000-$3000 every year that potentially won’t be covered by scholarships is just upsetting.”
The email from the provost said financial aid will be reassessed for the next academic year based on tuition increases and changes in financial circumstances, but the email does not specifically mention an adjustment to merit-based scholarships.
In the past, DU has not adjusted its merit-based scholarships, as students’ scholarship levels have stayed the same even after tuition increases.
