Hi everyone! My name is Ambriel Speagle and I am the Clarion’s next Executive Editor. I am a double major in Journalism and English with minors in International Studies and History, and am entering my fourth and final year at DU this fall.
I joined the Clarion as a contributing writer my first year at DU over a Zoom call. As a soft-spoken freshman, I was apprehensive to have my writing read and edited by my peers. Nervous as I was, I took the plunge, and it’s safe to say I am incredibly grateful I did. It’s hard to believe how much has changed since then, and I hope to continue to provide opportunities for new writers to find their voice just as the staff three years ago did for me.
Upon first joining the paper, I wrote everything from album reviews to reporting on the impacts of Covid on Denver’s small businesses. After finding my footing, I honed in on covering fast fashion and sustainability, allowing me to learn more and spread awareness about topics I was already passionate about.
My most rewarding part of my time at the Clarion thus far, however, has been my current position as Opinions Section Editor. After a six-month stint as a copy editor–a tedious but vital job–I got the taste for reading and learning from the work of my peers. Serving as a section editor for the past year has given me that and more.
Editing the work of the dedicated writers of the Opinions section has undoubtedly made me a better writer. I am impressed each week with the passion that shines through their words and the assurance with which they speak about important matters. I will greatly miss working so closely with you all.
I am, however, ecstatic to begin my work as Executive Editor and spend one last year watching writers grow and challenge themselves as journalists. I look forward to working with the soon-to-be Editor-in-Chief Aubrey Cox, whose polished writing and dedication to student journalism greatly inspires me in my own work. I am confident we will be successful in launching exciting new projects and increasing the presence of the Clarion on DU’s campus.
Before signing off, I want to thank the current Editor-in-Chief, Ana Ortega, for her support over the last several years. Her unparalleled work ethic at the Clarion is one to be admired and recognized, and I will forever cherish the laughter and sense of community she fostered amongst the staff.
And to the current staff and writers, congratulations on another successful year. I can’t wait to continue to watch the Clarion thrive this fall.
With gratitude,
Ambriel Speagle
