Need a pick-me-up during these frigid months of the winter quarter? With the new year rolling in, the Newman Center for the Performing Arts offers a variety of events to look forward to. Below is a list of upcoming events to add to your calendar. 

Masterclass: Anton Nel, piano | Jan. 19 @ 4 p.m. 

Anton Nel has been touring internationally as a recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and teacher ever since he won the 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition at Carnegie Hall. Don’t miss the chance to witness this virtuoso at Hamilton Hall. 

Masterclass: Don Gorder, jazz trumpet | Jan. 20 @ 12 p.m.

Don Gorder is an attorney, educator, musician and founder of the Music Business/Management Department at Berklee. He remains active as a jazz trumpet player and can be observed for free at the Williams Recital Hall. 

Senior Recital: Ben Hopkins, tuba Jan. 21 @ 1:30 p.m. 

Lamont Opera Theatre presents Opera’s Greatest Hits |Jan. 26 @ 7:30 p.m.

Hear opera hits from Rusalka, The Merry Widow, La Traviata, La Boheme and more performed by students in the Lamont Voice Department. 

A.I.M. by Kyle Abraham | Jan. 27 @ 7:30 p.m.

New York-based dance ensemble A.I.M. presents “An Untitled Love,” by choreographer Kyle Abraham. Labeled by OUT Magazine as the “best and brightest creative talent to emerge in New York City in the age of Obama,” Abraham’s work is influenced by Black culture and history. Drawing inspiration from a variety of movement styles, A.I.M. combines provocative choreography with music, text, video and visual art.  

Bush Marshall Meyer Meyer | Jan. 30 @ 7:30 p.m.

American virtuosos Sam Bush, dubbed ‘The King of Newgrass,’ Mike Marshall, Edgar Meyer and George Meyer come together for a night of bluegrass in the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall that you won’t want to miss.

Kenny Barron Trio | Feb. 2 @ 7:30 p.m.

Designated by the Los Angeles Times as “one of the top jazz pianists in the world,” Kenny Barron will be joined by bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake for an elegant jazz performance.

The Philip Glass Ensemble Feb. 9 @ 7:30 p.m.

In keeping the legacy of legendary composer Phillip Glass alive, the Phillip Glass Ensemble will perform his 1970 work “Music in Eight Parts,” previously thought to be lost. Additionally, the ensemble will play selections from Glass’s major works, such as “Koyaanisqatsi” and “Einstein on the Beach.” 

Kodo Feb. 18 @ 7:30 p.m and Feb. 19 @ 2 p.m.

Embarking on its 40th-anniversary tour and its first one since the pandemic is KODO, a group that creates musical wonders with the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko. This vibrant cultural art form will be performed at the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall for two days in a row.
