The Newman Center is the University of Denver’s (if not the entire city of Denver’s) heart for the performing arts. The building houses countless performances in the world of music, dance and beyond that are sure to please any audience member.

This season the Newman Center will be celebrating its 20th anniversary with a calendar of events that is exploding with variety and talent. Due to some events being canceled in past years due to COVID-19, the center was driven to stay true to past commitments as well.

With each season of magical performances, the Newman Center aims to create a community for the arts that is focused on showing appreciation for different cultures and what they have to offer. “NCPA (Newman Center for the Performing Arts) always strives to have a mix of music and movement art that reflects our world back to us. We aim to be inclusive and thought-provoking while also bringing back long-time Newman Center favorites,” Executive Director, Aisha Ahmad-Post, said.

Ahmad-Post and Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications Justin Levy explained how a lot of thought goes into planning the events at the Newman Center each year. The work behind the scenes ensures that the programming is inclusive for all audiences, so that there are events for people of any age and background.

Some events to look forward to include three different performances from contemporary dance groups, jazz groups including the six-time Grammy-winning Mingus Big Band and classical performances. The National Geographic Live Series will also be back for another year, with panels on topics from the secret life of bears to big wall rock climbing sure to expand the mind of any viewer. The season is set to open on Thursday, September 29 with a free performance by vertical dance group BANDALOOP on the outside of the engineering building. The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. and include food trucks from local vendors, as well as additional entertainment from Lamont students and other local artists.

Come support the Newman Center’s 20th year at the BANDALOOP performance, and keep an eye out for other events throughout the year.
