For many, Sunday evenings are dedicated to relaxing in honor of the weekend or wrapping up laundry and other necessary tasks before the week starts. But the nightlife was alive and thriving last night as Naked Giants paid a visit to Larimer Lounge to showcase their exhilarating performance.
Prior to the band taking the stage, fellow Washington natives Enumclaw, kicked the night off with an energy surge show. From their chill demeanor when addressing the crowd, the bouts of screaming and guitar shredding had the audience surprised in the best way possible. The band achieved a sound that was a perfect balance of rough and loud as well as slowed and melodic. With traces of 90s grunge and 80s punk in their music, Enumclaw was a crowd pleaser for the demographic of people that came together last night.
With hearts pumping and anticipation high, Enumclaw wrapped up their set and left the crowd ready for Naked Giants. Just as in their transition between songs during the set, the band wasted little time before jumping into performing. From the opening line of the song “SLUFF,” the band made it clear that they were there to have fun and weren’t afraid to let loose.
Although the room was packed wall to wall, the band made room for unbridled noise and energy that was delivered seamlessly. Being such a small venue, it is really hit or miss in terms of sound at Larimer Lounge. It’s up to the band’s abilities to create a sound that is robust and clear. Showcasing their technicality and musical abilities, Naked Giants did not fall short in terms of delivering amazing sound within the confines of the small venue.
Naked Giants brought a well-rounded blend from their discography with fan favorites such as “Slowdance II” and “Take a Chance” in addition to newer songs such as “Unpeeled” and oldies including “Everybody Thinks They Know (But No One Really Knows).” Not to mention the encore of “Green Fuzz,” an extended performance of the song where the band broke into drum solos and funk-inspired guitar riffs.
Each band member fully tapped into their role, working in conjunction to produce an untamed and fun atmosphere. There was no uncertainty in their playing, fully confident on their instruments, each band member was grooving in their own way. They fully displayed the excitement that their music induces in them and its ability to harness self-expression.
Grant Mullen and Gianni Aiello’s vocals matched that of their recorded music and instrumentally they surpassed what can be heard on their records. Mullen’s distorted and technically intricate guitar riffs brought the energy up and were matched by Henry LaValle on drums as an intense percussive force.
Throughout the entire set, the crowd resonated with the energy on stage. Whilst headbanging and moshing along with the music, a sense of shared excitement and affinity towards the band’s performance were present. Not a second of the show succumbed to anything less than riveting. After their long stretch of songs, up to the last note of their invigorating encore, Naked Giants flawlessly brought their music to life and became a new fan favorite in Denver.
