Home of The Fray, Jake Schepps, The Samples and a handful of other folk, pop, bluegrass and reggae bands, it is safe to say that Boulder, CO, has a handful of genres to offer when it comes to local bands. Yet siblings John and Lulu Demitro felt something was missing when they began Pink Fuzz in 2018.
“Boulder was kind of hard to navigate. We had to make a lot of DIY shows, sort of make our own scene when we did play in Boulder. In terms of venues and stuff, it is not the town for heavy rock stuff,” John said.
The band, consisting of the Demitro siblings as well as their drummer Forest Raup, grew up in Boulder, where music was a prevalent aspect of their lives from an early age. For the Demitrios specifically, Lulu said that they grew up in, “a very musical household.” She went on to explain how John and her would dance around the dinner table for hours listening to Little Richard’s rendition of the “Hokey, Pokey.”
“We grew up playing music, listening to music, all of it,” Lulu said.
The band started playing music together when they were teenagers, then when they all moved to Denver, chose the name Pink Fuzz and immersed themselves in the music scene there. John explained that Pink Fuzz was a touring band from early on, playing for small crowds all around the U.S.
“It was a really humbling lesson for a young band to go on tour, and just realize it is a lot of work,” John said.
Inspired by Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, the rock elements of Pink Fuzz’s music is undeniable, yet as John explained, “I would say we are a hard rock band, we have our moments where we are more alternative, we just have a lot of different elements.”
When creating music, Pink Fuzz opts for an unfiltered and energetic feel that is not limited to their sonic elements. Lyrically, Lulu described that when songwriting she draws from a variety of subject matters.
“It is a good exercise to pull from all emotions and all experiences,” she said.
The brother and sister duo explained that the cohesiveness in songwriting comes from their approach and overarching chemistry between members. “We all kind of write on our own, and then bring whatever we have to the band and we start developing it with the rest of the bandmates. It is awesome to just bring in a seed of an idea and then be able to go from there.
That’s how I like to do it,” John said. “We’re able to like, I don’t know, write together in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever been able to write with anybody else,” he added.
The band is currently working on their second full-length album which is set to be released next year. They have several upcoming shows in Denver which can be found on their website and social media accounts. In terms of where they see Pink Fuzz headed in the future Lulu stated, “we are trying to play the best that we can and make the best music that we can make.”
Despite the intense effort that comes with pushing themselves as musicians, John expressed his overall goal to “just to have fun doing it because if you are not having fun doing it there is really no point.”
