In an industry where individuality can easily be overpowered, Kezia delivers authenticity and vulnerability in her music: there is a raw personal touch that draws listeners into a world that is characterized by Kezia’s uniqueness.

Music has surrounded Kezia their entire life, which came to be an integral inspiration to her art. “Music is everywhere. There is not a place where music doesn’t touch. There are not a lot of places where music is not involved, and that’s what makes it so special,” Kezia said.

With an eclectic music background, Kezia was inspired by artists such as the Red Hot Chile Peppers, My Chemical Romance, Musiq Souldchild, Amy Winehouse and Frank Ocean. Growing up, Kezia recalled moments when music filled her childhood from listening to music in the car with her parents to getting a guitar and music lessons as gifts.

At the age of 17, Kezia began taking music more seriously as a career, performing more often and releasing her music on streaming platforms. Kezia explained that acting was an option that they considered when considering what to do after college: “I had been talking to my mom about it and she pointed out that with acting and theatre, the job is to be the character. With music, you kind of get to create your own world, your own destiny, your own path. And that was something that I think at the time appealed to me more as I was finding myself and developing myself,” Kezia said.

From that moment on, Kezia poured her heart out into her music. As Kezia continued writing songs, they explained that they fell in love with the process of creating music: “I love not knowing where I’m going. I love just jumping in and being completely surprised by the end of the session with what I’m walking away with,” Kezia stated. They went on to explain, “When I was starting to make music, I would really stress myself out during my writing process. In the middle of writing a verse I would stop and try to analyze my lyrics and what I was doing. That really puts a lot of blockages in my creative process.”

Kezia learned to tap into her unconscious mind when writing and was drawn to the element of surprise that it provided them with. Within their songwriting, Kezia taps into her identity, using her spirituality and race as a motivating force. “I have a very spiritual background, it’s been a cornerstone of my life. I was always able to lean on my spirituality. And whether it’s very obvious or not, there’s always a spiritual undercurrent and a spiritual being to all my music that I write. There’s always a lesson to be taken from my music,” Kezia said.

They also described how being bi-racial has always had a great effect on them and their music: “Being biracial, it was very hard for me to just feel comfortable and accepted for who I was because I was not enough of this, then I was not enough of that.”

This struggle to find comfort and acceptance pushed Kezia to create a space within their music where others could feel welcomed. “I want people to feel strong within themselves and strong enough to trust themselves and to also express themselves freely. That’s always been something that’s really important to me is self-empowerment of the people around me,” she said.

In the years to come, Kezia aspires to create impactful music as well as branching into other forms of expression including fashion and filmmaking. Kezia’s music can be found on streaming platforms including SoundCloud and Spotify, with her premiere EP “Claire” set to be released on June 11.
