At first glance, “Claire” is another pop-inspired R&B album that can be heard on car radios or TikTok. But with further examination, Kezia’s musical creativity shines through. Blending vocal styles and elements pulled from several genres, Kezia delivers an EP charged with intense passion and honesty in “Claire.”

Kezia was born in California and began releasing music when she was only 17-years-old. Raised in a musical household, they were surrounded by sources of inspiration from a young age ranging from musicians such as Fela Kuti to My Chemical Romance. 

“Claire” is evidence of Kezia’s exposure to a plethora of genres. In seven songs, they layer the perfect amount of variety in sound and style while still claiming a specific aesthetic. Elements of indie music are present in the melodic guitar riffs of songs such as the pre-released single, “Megan Fox.” 

Central to the album is a focus on modern conventions of R&B music with rhythmic drum beats and smooth feminine vocals. There is also a mix of instrumentation that draws on R&B qualities. Mallet percussion is integrated alongside jazz-influenced bass lines and electronic trap beats. This produces a sound that is both modern and reminiscent of earlier female R&B and rap artists such as TLC, Ms. Lauryn Hill and Destiny’s Child. 

Kezia presents vocals that are melodic and sensual, layering in tracks sung in different registers. Steady-paced rap flows with the rhythmic elements on the album. Kezia’s vocals sway from smooth, sweet tones to deep rap sections that display both their talent and ability to incorporate varying tones and genres. 

Raw and relatable lyrics amplify the already likable popular music sound on “Claire.” Kezia touches on topics pertaining to their life, including love, heartbreak, substance use, pain and the future. Kezia speaks from the heart in a way that is subtle beneath the melodic flow of sonic elements in the EP.
