On Saturday, the Denver men’s lacrosse team defeated St. John’s with an explosive 19-11 victory. The team took a 15-0 lead in the first 19 minutes of the game to become 10-3 for the season. 

In the first quarter, Denver set the school’s new single-quarter scoring record with 12 goals. Senior midfielder Jack Hannah (Milford, Ohio) was notably the only player with multiple goals in the opening 15 minutes. Hannah contributed to two of the first quarter goals, including the game opener, while the other 10 came from other teammates. 

The beginning of the second quarter saw 2 more Denver goals to bring the team to a 15-0 lead. Graduate student and short-stick defensive midfielder Danny Logan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) opened the second quarter scoring with his fourth goal of the season. Simmons earned his third goal of the game before St. John’s got on the board. 

St. John’s got their first goal of the game with eight minutes left in the first half. The opposing team then scored their second of the game before sophomore attack Reed Babcock (Denver, Colo.) finished out the second quarter with his fourth goal of the season. 

Although Denver took the game’s early lead, St. John’s came out strong in the second half, outscoring DU 9-3. But Denver’s first-half lead held strong, and they were able to finish the game with a 19-11 victory. Junior midfielder Sam Dwinell (Dedham, Mass.) had two of Denver’s second-half goals, while junior Carter Brand (Ottawa, Ontario) scored the final goal of the game and his first of the season. 

In addition to breaking the school’s single-quarter scoring record, the Denver team tied the record for the number of faceoff wins as a team. Graduate student and faceoff specialist TD Ierlan (Victor, N.Y.) finished a perfect 12-for-12, and sophomore faceoff specialist Alec Stathakis (Northville, Mich.) ended the game 10-for-11. Junior faceoff specialist Brett Boos (Parker, Colo.) was the last player to contribute to the record-tying with 6 individual victories that brought the team to 28 team faceoff wins. 

The team also tied the program’s record for the number of different goal scorers in a single game. Denver had 14 different players score with Simmons’ four leading the team. 

DU looks to continue their strong season as they travel to Villanova on April 28 to close out their regular 2021 season. The game will be streamed on Villanova’s website, and the radio broadcast will be available on ESPN Denver 1600.
