Going into a new year, many of us are taking a good, hard look at our habits. We may be adding better practices or cutting down on some not-so-good ones like too much sugar or insufficient sleep. One of those habits that you may be looking into cutting down on is your caffeine intake.

Why Cut Back on Coffee

There are a few different reasons why people would want to cut back on coffee. The beverage itself can cause some stomach and intestinal or stomach upset, making some feel bloated or even nauseous. Due to its acidity, more sensitive digestive systems can be thrown out of whack by coffee.

Aside from the mild tummy upset, coffee can have some other adverse effects on the body. It can stain your teeth easily. Some bad coffees can be toxic, causing vomiting and headaches. 

Many of us also don’t enjoy drinking coffee black. This leads to many coffee beverages coming with loads of added sugars, dairy, and artificial flavors, all of which can do a number on your otherwise healthy system in a bunch of different ways.

Yet, the biggest problem associated with coffee is caffeine. As the main ingredient and a huge selling point for coffee in general, there are also a fair amount of reasons to cut back on or even eliminate caffeine.

Problems With Too Much Caffeine

A lot of us rely on caffeine to give us a quick energy boost in those early mornings when it seems impossible to get out of bed, and yet you must clock in any way. Coffee is an efficient way to deliver that boost right to your bloodstream, but that’s the issue; it is just a quick fix.

Caffeine, though widely accepted in society, is still a drug. Anyone who has become dependent on caffeine’s daily consumption will tell you that the addiction and withdrawals are real. 

You might want to cut back on caffeine due to the severe effect it can have on your health; the drug can cause heart palpitations, headaches, and anxiety. Since it is a stimulant, it is notorious for also messing with a regular sleep cycle. 

While totally fine and even beneficial in smaller doses, caffeine overload is easy and harmful to your body.

What Makes a Good Alternative?

If you’ve decided you’re finally going to take the plunge and break up with your daily cup of coffee, you’ll probably find yourself missing the ritual of it. Having a warm beverage to keep you toasty on chilly days, or even the satisfying flavor of it can make it tough to go without some sort of liquid substitute for your morning routine.

But what are you looking for in an alternative that can even compare to coffee? Here are a few things to consider

Flavor

The most important thing you’re going to be on the lookout for is something that tastes good. Coffee is a roasted bean to be more easily replaced with other earthy, natural flavors. Beverage alternatives containing cacao, cinnamon, and masala chai can give you that earthy flavor you’re looking for.

Less Caffeine

If you’re trying to cut back on caffeine, you don’t have to completely give it up. There are healthier alternatives to coffee that have only a tiny portion of the caffeine that your typical cup of joe has so that you can get the mild stimulating and focusing effects without all the coffee jitters.
