The Trump administration has left a number of scars on this country. Some of the policies the administration implemented were disastrous for many people and institutions. Much damage has already been done and cannot be reversed. This includes but is not limited to the number of deported immigrants and the racial inequalities that were solidified into our society as a result of Trump’s words and actions. To rectify this, President Joe Biden has signed 42 executive orders since his inauguration to reduce the consequences of the policies made by the previous administration. The last four years are impossible to erase, but Biden is heading in the right direction with these recent executive orders.
One ill decision Trump made was disbanding the “directorate for global health security and biodefense at the National Security Council.” This department helps monitor global health risks and advises the federal government on how to take action to assure the safety of their citizens. Considering the entire world is suffering under a pandemic, this order was counterproductive. Biden is attempting to quell the nation’s agony by restoring what Trump dissolved.
This action will aid to improve the U.S.’s pandemic response. Biden has also ramped up the pace for COVID-19 testing and vaccine manufacturing. Agency leaders will be tasked with monitoring supplies in given areas. If there are shortages of masks, vaccine manufacturing equipment or other needed pandemic supplies, then the Defense Production Act will be enacted. The act forces the government to ensure that supplies are being made accessible as quickly as possible. The Biden administration is already making more progress in aiding its citizens during the pandemic than the previous administration ever did.
In addition to addressing pandemic concerns, Biden has implemented executive orders regarding immigration. Not only did Biden reinforce Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), his new order calls for the implementation of legislation to provide permanent status and a pathway to citizenship for the recipients of DACA. These executive orders assure more safety to immigrants and enable them to seek better futures without the added concern of deportation or being stripped of their rights.
We grew divided as a nation under the Trump administration. A prime example of this divide is the Capital riots. Citizens were trying to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, and their actions were only fueled by former President Trump. The nation was divided between wanting one candidate over the other, and they were unwilling to accept the final results.
President Biden constructs a new path to reunite the nation through the fast enactment of executive orders, and they will help nurse this country back to health. All 17 executive orders made by Biden are essential to our continued prosperity.
