The No. 7 ranked Denver women’s gymnastics team scored a 196.925 to win Sunday’s senior meet. The Pioneers outscored No. 12 Washington, San Jose State and Alaska. Sunday afternoon’s focus was on seniors Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) and Courtney Loper (West Des Moines, Iowa) as they competed in their last home meet of their careers. Karr has been an instrumental part of the team’s success this season and is currently tied with the highest all-around score in program history while Loper, who competed with the Pioneers for the past three years, has played an special role as this year’s Student-Athlete Coach.
The Pioneers began the meet on the vault where Karr scored a 9.900 to take first place. Junior Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) and sophomore Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) both scored a 9.800 to tie for sixth overall. The Pioneers earned a team score of 48.900 to place second in this event to the University of Washington, who scored a 49.075.
Once on the bars, the Pioneers scored a 49.425 to earn their top event score of the meet. Karr scored a 9.975 to capture another first place title while Glynn was close behind with a 9.900. Ruiz also had an impressive night on the bars, scoring a 9.875 to tie her season’s best while freshman Amoree Lockhart (Fort Worth, Texas) earned a 9.825 to match her career best. Sophomore Natalie Morton (Waycross, Ga.) also set a new personal record with a 9.750.
On the beam, Vasquez took first place with a 9.950 while Karr tied for second with a 9.900. Freshman Callie Schlottman (Savage, Minn.) was just .025 short of her personal best in this event with a 9.825 while Ruiz and freshman Emma Brown (Adel, Iowa) both scored a 9.800. The Pioneers finished on the beam with a score of 49.275 to top the other three teams.
The Pioneers had yet another impressive showing on the floor as Karr matched her career high with a 9.950 that earned her another first place title. Lockhart also tied her personal best, scoring a 9.875 to finish seventh overall. The Pioneers earned a team score of 49.325 but fell short in this event to the University of Washington who scored a 49.600.
However, Denver came out victorious with a .800 win over Washington. Karr earned another all-around title with a 39.725 that tied the fifth-highest all-around score in program history. Ruiz earned a third place all-around finish, scoring a 39.325 that was just .100 away from her career high.
The University of Denver women’s gymnastics team finishes out the regular season next weekend as they travel to take on Nebraska on Saturday, Mar. 14.
