Many new waves of music are emerging out of mankind’s sea of creativity, and chillwave is leading the transition. People come from far and wide to hear the synth-style pop music with heavy subwoofers and a droning treble, and the music is truly mind numbing in the best kind of way. Toro y Moi originally started writing this style of music in 2009, and he was the first of his kind. The style of music has since grown immensely, as can be noted by how many people are attracted to their music and their performances.

On Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019, Channel Tres and Toro y Moi performed at the Ogden Theatre in downtown Denver. The theater itself is in a very unsafe neighborhood off Colfax Street, and so it’s best to go in groups. The Ogden Theatre is best to attend if you are 21 and older, as there are bars on both floors. Inside the theater, there are only seats on the second level, so there is plenty of room to dance. The stage has fantastic lights, and the speakers are phenomenal. Overall, the venue is perfect for the music.

Toro y Moi attracted people of all kinds, but most of the crowd was 25 years and up, and they were all there to party. The moment he strolled onto the stage, everyone was thrilled to see him, and the crowd went wild. After a quick introduction, Toro y Moi dived right into the music, and once the music began droning, everyone started moving to the irresistible pulse. Even the band onstage could not stop moving to the pulse of the music, and their dancing raised the energy so everyone was affected by the music.

Every few songs, Toro y Moi would comment on how wonderful the audience was, and how exciting it was to be in Colorado. Some of his comments were lost to the perpetual background noise, but the crowd still adored every moment he spoke. While everyone enjoyed his ease on stage and all of his statements, whenever one of Toro y Moi’s popular songs played, such as “Ordinary Pleasure,” “Freelance” or “Girl Like You,” the crowd went absolutely berserk, and everyone knew every lyric to the song. It was almost impossible to hear the band over everyone screaming the lyrics, and that was truly a sight to behold. Whenever the energy began dying down, Toro y Moi would notice and bring the hype back up with a few words and an enthusiastic drum beat. His understanding of the audience was very clear, and there was never a dull moment while Toro y Moi was onstage.

All the music was fantastic, and the lights and overall presentation was just as amazing. The stage lights were perfectly timed to the music, and added the perfect layer of emotion to the performance. Every melancholic song had blue lighting, and every energetic song had varying colors that drove the audience wild. The visual presentation made the concert go from great to phenomenal.

Each of the band members also had their moment when it was just them lit up on stage, and while they were featured, they truly showcased their skills. While some of these moments were more of a jam session than a professional concert, the audience still loved it and the band’s charisma was wonderful. The overall performance was truly amazing and a must-see, so anyone interested in Toro y Moi’s music should do their best to see him live.
