Oct. 10 was a cold day, as DU saw its first snow of the year. Students walked to class in winter jackets and boots, trying to survive the cold as much as possible. This made the perfect day for picking up some macaroni and cheese at the Alpha Phi event Mac n Phis.

Mac n Phis has been an Alpha Phi tradition for years and is an important fundraiser to support women’s heart health. A portion of the proceeds goes directly into the sorority’s philanthropy, The Alpha Phi Foundation, which raises money for research and education for women’s heart health.

“Women’s heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States,” said Caroline Bulf, president of Alpha Phi. “It impacts all of us, and some members of the sorority have been affected personally by this.”

Mac n Phis first featured homemade macaroni and cheese by the sorority. However, the sorority decided to have a vendor serve macaroni and cheese on campus so more DU students would attend the event.

Macaroni and cheese was served by the Mac n Noodles food truck catering three options of Four Cheese, macaroni and cheese with bacon and the “Bronco,” a spicier macaroni and cheese served with jalapenos. Students could grab a bowl with a bottle of water for the cheap price of $10. Alpha Phi accommodated for the cold weather by setting up tents for students to stand under, putting tables for students to stand and eat while chatting with their friends.

Students enjoyed their warm bowls of macaroni and cheese on the first day of snow. Mac n Phis was served at a perfect time, as it was a chance to cater comfort food on a cold day and during midterms, providing a much needed break from the stress of school. And even more important, the event was put together for a good cause, raising awareness for women’s heart health and promoting the importance of research and prevention of the number one killer of women in the United States.
