Cinco de Mayo, the holiday that marks the victory of the Mexican army over the French Empire on May 5, 1862 (not the country’s independence, as often wrongly reported), offers everyone the opportunity to enjoy Mexican-American heritage and cultural offerings. The holiday is more than just an excuse to drink, but having a good time is the entire intention. Here’s a short list of some of the best events and ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in and outside the city.
1. Denver Cinco de Mayo “Celebrate Culture” Festival
Held at Civic Center Park in Downtown Denver, the Cinco de Mayo festival offers a range of entertainment for celebrating the holiday. Attendees can expect amazing food and drink options, live music, a taco eating contest, a Chihuahua race and more. While food and drink obviously cost, the event itself is free to attend. The festival runs 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
2. Lola 10th Annual Picnic of the Pig
Lola Coastal Mexican restaurant, located in the Lower Highlands neighborhood, is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with their 10th annual Picnic of the Pig street party. The celebration features menus from neighborhood restaurants and celebrations, all celebrating delicious pig offerings. Also included is live music, luchador wrestling and drink specials. The party runs from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
3. Visit to the Museo De Las Americas
Located in the Sante Fe Arts District, the Museo de Las Americas provides educational and beautiful exhibitions of Latin American art. The museum offers an opportunity for revelers to learn and celebrate Latinx culture in Denver beyond just drinking and dining. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
4. Enjoy Cinco de Mayo on the slopes.
There’s no better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than by soaking up the sun during the last few days of the ski season. On the holiday, Arapahoe Basin offers live music at the base from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cinco de Mayo falls on the penultimate day of the season at Loveland Ski Area. To celebrate, the ski area is offering live music in the afternoon at the base and excitingly, the first annual Neverland Banked Slalom Race all day.
