In its final exhibition match before its season opener against Air Force, DU Men’s Lacrosse defeated Delaware 19-12. Fourteen different Pioneers scored, including goals from each one of the midfield lines, and 10 players in the first 30 minutes.
“First of all, I want to thank Delaware for coming out here to play. A lot of teams won’t do that, and we really appreciate them flying out here for this scrimmage. The two things we’ll take away from this is first of all, thankfully we will now have film of us against an opponent, and secondly, we have a lot of work to do, and a week to do it in,” Head Coach Bill Tierney said following the match. “There were some things we did well. Obviously Trevor [Baptiste] was really good again. I thought offensively we went on some real runs, which we’ve been known to do, but other times we were kind of flat. Defensively we need to be more aware of what’s going on around us. Sometimes when Trevor wins every faceoff, you get a little complacent at the other end, and I thought you saw that today.”
Senior Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) won 17-24 faceoffs, and picked up 10 ground balls, picking up from last year’s success. Baptiste started his final season with the Pioneers when he was awarded the 2018 Big East Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Denver’s scoring was led by junior Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who had four goals, all in the first half. Junior attackman Austin French (Danville, Calif.) had two goals, and junior attackman Colin Rutan (Walnut Creek, Calif.) finished with one. Sophomore and 2018 Big East Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) had two goals.
Other scorers for Denver included Baptise, redshirt-senior Connor Flynn (Charlotte N.C.), sophomore Kyle Smith (New Canaan, Conn.), freshman Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.), junior Nate Marano (Tustin, Calif), senior Jeremy Bosher (Kamloops, B.C.), senior Sean Mayle (San Carlos, Calif.), sophomore Danny Logan (Upper Arlington, Ohio), redshirt-freshman Zach Hutchko (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Jack Hannah (Milford, Ohio).
Denver opens its 2018 season on Feb. 10 with a trip to Air Force. The match starts at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on 104.3, the Fan.
