Leslie Knope once said, “Why would anybody ever eat anything other than breakfast food?” I truly believe that a more accurate question has never been posed. I love breakfast food. I feel that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I hold equal affection towards all dishes that one would commonly eat in the morning: French toast, omelets, cereal. To me, all of them are equally satisfying and make my heart do a little pitter-patter.
Due to my extreme affinity, I was more than excited to try out an uncharted brunch restaurant less than two miles from campus called Breakfast on Broadway. As I do with most restaurants, I previewed the menu beforehand and came in with the game plan of splitting a ‘stuffed brioche French toast’ and a ‘quiche of the day’ with the table to fulfill both sweet and savory flavor notes.
Walking into Breakfast on Broadway I was reminded of a small-scale Denny’s. Colored vinyl booths and black and white photographs give the restaurant a charming old-school diner vibe. Our waitress was kind and accommodating, the service was great and the location cannot be beat. So, it is with a heavy heart that I declare that the food left me remarkably underwhelmed. The cream filling in the French toast offered hues of citrus and nut but none of cream or deliciousness. The quiche of the day, a promised dish of feta, spinach and ham, offered rubbery egg and no feta morsel to be found for tables.
Breakfast on Broadway has an undeniable charm and its proximity to campus make it as convenient as it is quaint. I give high marks for their delicious coffee and great potato pancakes, but due to the quality of the main-dishes themselves, I have to declare that I will not be returning to Breakfast on Broadway in the near future. It breaks my heart. But my love-affair with breakfast lives on, as well as my search for the perfect off-campus brunch spot.
