This week, we meet Jimmy. Jimmy can be found in the JMAC Convenience Store (C-Store) and readily greets passing students with a friendly smile, a wave or a “How’s it goin,’ ma’ queen?”

Jimmy is originally from Oakland, California and is a die-hard Raiders fan. In his spare time, he enjoys playing chess and cooking—especially Caribbean food. When walking by or into the C-Store, one can always see this charismatic employee jamming to his favorite rapper, E-40, or some classic R&B. Also a self-proclaimed family man, Jimmy is the second youngest of his five siblings. Incredibly, seven generations of Jimmy’s family have lived in Colorado. He accurately describes himself as funny, outgoing, friendly and laid-back.

Jimmy started working at DU in 2014 and has undeniably made his mark on campus. His favorite memory here was when he was awarded Employee of the Year at the beginning of Winter Quarter.

When asked what his favorite part about DU is, he answered without hesitation, “Well, y’all…I’m around success everyday.”

Jimmy has not always been a Sodexo employee at DU, however. The thing he wishes everyone knew is that he is actually an ex-gang member.

“I’m a changed man. I’ve had a lot of different experiences and I’m happy with where I am now, but I want people to know that I’m changed and I’m proud,” said Jimmy.

Students ardently reciprocate warm feelings towards Jimmy. Kylie Van Aken, a junior majoring in engineering from Seattle, loves the positivity that Jimmy brings to JMAC.

“He [Jimmy] is always super friendly, says hi to everyone and makes your day a little brighter,” said Abby Leigh, a freshman socio-legal studies major from Bainbridge Island, Wash. “Jimmy always makes me smile.”

Jimmy is a cherished member of the DU community and has made, and continues to make, a positive impact on students’ lives by confirming that simple, genuine kindness goes a long way.
