The hardest part about a snowy campus is getting out of bed to walk through it. Olivia Hyde | Clarion

For once, the weather people are correct. You stare out your bedroom window and find a suspiciously deep winter wonderland. Snow is  one of the best things on earth, but when there is a foot and a half on the ground and you have an 8 a.m. class in some far-flung campus building, that snow seems more like a nuisance. So how on earth do you roll out of your comfortable sheets and get on with the day when the administration decides that snow days are for wimps like CC? Maybe these motivational tips will help.

1. Cold Shower

Okay, this might seem completely backwards. Why take a cold shower when the exact reason you don’t want to go outside and to class is the cold and snow? Well for one thing, cold showers have numerous health benefits, such as improving circulation, strengthening the immune system and increasing energy and well-being. That last point is the most important. Start your “should be a snow day” mornings off with a regularly warm shower, but for the last few minutes, turn that dial all the way into the blue. The shock will wake you right up and increase your heart rate and breathing patterns. Just make sure to fully dry off before stepping outside into the freezing air.

2. Coffee

Does this even need to be said? There’s a reason coffee consumption increases so much in college. Coffee warms you up, wakes you up, makes you alert and is horribly addicting. Okay, maybe that last one isn’t a benefit, but the fact still remains—nothing can quite help you make it through the day like caffeine, especially when the stroll to class is like a walk through Siberia.

3. Your professor doesn’t want to go to class either

This might not seem so motivating, but if your professor—who probably has to drive through the storm to get to campus—still thinks it’s important enough to have class during a snowy day, then it probably is a good idea for you to go as well. Professors don’t want to get out of bed during a winter day just as much as us students, and they get paid either way.

4. Skip on a sunny day

While the warm embrace of your bed might seem overwhelming, and that enticing thought of skipping class on a snowy day is very strong, put it off and save it for a sunny day. When the weather is nicer, it’s easier to actually do active things instead of the usual binge watching “Friends” and gorging on ramen.

5. Use it Wisely

If you do decide to take the easy way out, and not got to class on those snowy days, be constructive with your time. Use your self-given snow day for something creative and awesome, such as igloo building or shredding some sweet on-campus powder. Or be productive and try to get some future studying done; the choice is yours.
