Nicknamed “Bruce Lee” by weather forecasters, warmer-than-typical water in the tropical Pacific has created a weather/ocean circulation pattern known as “El Niño” that is affecting the Centennial State. So far, projections from weather experts that it will be strong, perhaps even record-breaking, have proven true with Denver snowfall slightly above average.
According to the Weather Service’s climate prediction center, the impacts of Bruce Lee on temperature and precipitation will likely intensify and continue into the early Spring. For Colorado powder junkies, this is a very exciting prospect for good spring skiing and snowboarding conditions.
“I’m hoping El Niño delivers big snow in the spring,” said second year marketing student, Kylee Skall. “Nothing beats spring skiing.”
For students too busy to hit the slopes every weekend, there’s plenty of other ways to enjoy all the cold and snow El Niño has to offer right here in Denver. Check out the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park, where you can rent skates for just $2 or bring your own and skate for free. If you really want to immerse yourself in the cold, Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre will be holding its annual Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks on Jan. 29. General admission tickets are being sold for $52.80 and this year the iconic show will feature Adventure Club and Big Grams.
