Some of the most talented and interesting acts of the past couple of years have come out of the UK. From Adele to Years and Years, these artists are making big waves all over the world and many more artists are coming. One of my personal favorites is Låpsley, a British singer/songwriter who creates emotional and soft electronic music. She has been creating since 2013 and has released some of the most unique and fresh sounds I’ve ever heard.

Back at the beginning of 2015 I heard one of her most well-known songs, “Falling Short,” and was immediately interested. Her voice flows effortlessly over a somber piano tune and, over time, layers of drum machines and other synth beats build into the song. One key characteristic of her music is her poetic lyrics that give all her songs a strong emotional tone, which is clear in this song.

“Falling Short” was from her second EP, and at this time it definitely felt like she was still growing into her sound. Throughout 2015 she released multiple tracks that showed her quick and strong growth, one of those songs is “Station.” At first listen it sounds like a duet, her voice and the lower voice layer over each other while also playing as a conversation. For the longest time, I was convinced that there was another singer on the track, but turns out she actually adjusted the pitch of her own voice to make it sound completely different and much lower. It’s a very cool and subtle addition that adds to the character of the song.

Her last song of 2015 was “Hurt Me,” which in my opinion, is her best release yet. It has an amazing hook that makes it more pop-like than most of her music. Again, lyrically this song is beautiful; for only being 19 years old Låpsley has clearly gone through a lot and pours her heart into her music. Also the layers of different beats and melodies in this song fit perfectly and show the high level of production quality.

Most recently, as a promotion for her first album set to come out in March, she released an album sampler featuring “Falling Short,” Hurt Me” and a re-edited version of “Station,” but also a new song, “Love Is Blind.” Again, she builds on some pop aspects but the soul of the music is definitely not lost. It has an ethereal nature to it, with the addition of harp accompanying her angelic voice.

Her music keeps getting better and better. I also recommend checking out “Brownlow,” “Dancing” and “Burn.” I’m looking forward to hearing what new sounds she gives us with her first album titled “Long Way Home” which is set to be released on March 4th.
