We may only be a few weeks into the school year, but winter quarter always has a tendency to sneak up on us. Considering how hot it’s been lately, it’s easy to forget that Denver gets seriously weather confused once November rolls around (below zero one day, hot and sunny the next). Before that happens, fend off the post fall blues by enjoying all the colors this season has to offer. Check out these spots around campus for your daily dose of Denver’s prettiest time of the year.

DeBoer Park

Media, film and journalism studies students are very familiar with DeBoer Park, often using it as a backdrop for video class projects. For those who haven’t found their way down to that neck of campus, the park features a playground, a river and lots of open space to lay out on. The massive trees scattered throughout the area are a sight for sore eyes and a definite place you need to tick off your fall checklist.

The courtyard behind Sturm

This hidden gem is often overlooked because it is tucked away and off to the side of Sturm Hall’s back entrance. The secluded area is practically overrun by trees and you’ll soon be blanketed in red, yellow and orange leaves if you choose to lounge in its seating area. Serene and shaded, this courtyard is a relaxing place to do homework and get lost in the enchanting fall feel it provides.

Harvard Gulch Park

Harvard Gulch Park, off of Iliff Avenue and South Ogden Street, offers a variety of outdoor activities and a lot of it will most likely be untouchable until spring comes around. In part the park is a 9-hole golf course for those seeking a more active foliage-viewing experience. There is also a path that winds its way throughout the open greenery, momentarily stopping at a river that also flows alongside the park. There are plenty of areas in which to be active or just chill if you want to soak in the beautiful scenery, which is highly recommended.

Fountains behind Mary Reed

This administrative building doesn’t sound like an appealing place for students to hangout at, but that’s because its backyard fountain area goes by completely unnoticed. Right behind the building, one can find a short flight of stairs leading to an open area, that is accompanied by a few lounging chairs and a fountain plaza. This elevated area also looks over the DU campus and the Harper Humanities Garden, providing a nice view of DU’s lavishly green landscape. Another bonus feature is a map pointing to every mountain peak seen in the distance (a perk that might get you stoked for winter afterall). Although this fountain fall spot is located on campus, one feels as if he or she was transported into a calming oasis.

Try and take advantage of the weather and the DU campus while the sun is still shining and the leaves are still changing. To help navigate your way to these four areas, check out the map below and see a detailed version at duclarion.com.
