This week, The Clarion sat down with women’s volleyball player Sarah Schmid.
Q: You started out attending school and playing volleyball at Rutgers University, how did you end up coming to DU?
A: My senior year of high school, I just wanted to get away and experience a new part of the country. I liked the team and I liked the school, but I was a little homesick. Colorado is such a great state and going somewhere else wasn’t really the best fit for me. I decided to come back home and I’m really glad that I did.
Q: How was it when you started playing for DU? Did you notice any differences in your play or in the atmosphere?
A: It’s just nice having your family come to the games and being so close to home. The team dynamic here is awesome, as well. We’re all really close. We do stuff outside of volleyball. We call ourselves a DU VB family, because we truly are a family.
Q: How has the beginning of this season been going for you and for the team?
A: It’s going really well. Each week we improve a little bit more. Personally, I’ve grown a lot. We are really physical this year and I look forward to seeing what the rest of the season holds.
Q: Since it is your last season, do you have any individual goals or goals for the team to really make this season stand out?
A: Winning the conference again is the first step and then making it to the NCAA rounds. Last year, we made it to the NCAAs and we made history by doing that, but I want to take it a step further and make it to the second round. I would like to be on the All-Conference team again, too.
Q: What are your plans for future plans post graduation?
A: I’m part of the teaching program here [at Denver]. I start taking classes this year for the teaching school and next year I’ll be doing my Master’s.
