This week, The Clarion sat down with golfer Adam Ruben.
Q: When did you begin playing golf?
A: My freshman year of high school is when I first started playing competitively. I first got onto the course at 14-15. I played baseball growing up, mostly.
Q: When you started playing golf in high school, what made you decide to pursue golf at a collegiate level?
A: I love the game and I want to pursue playing pro. I figured college was a good stepping stone for that.
Q: How were you recruited?
A: I played at the Junior Worlds when I was a junior in high school. DU’s old head coach was there and he followed me for 18 holes and then emailed me the next day. He asked if I wanted to come visit and I said sure. I picked Denver for the school size. I knew it was a place I could play and play against the top people at the top schools.
Q: During this season, has there been one meet or tournament where you have done exceptionally well?
A: In the last two tournaments, I’ve taken top 20. Those are the best two finishes so far for me in college.
Q: Is there a specific tournament ahead that you are looking forward to?
A: I’m looking forward to Bandon Dunes, which is four hours from my home in Oregon. We just got into that tournament this year. I know my parents and family will be there. I’ve played the course six times.
Q: Since golf is more of an individual sport, how do the goals you have for yourself compare to the success of the team?
A: I’m trying to do the best I can, win tournaments and work on my weaknesses. For me and the team, that’s our main goal. Also, just having fun. If you’re having fun, you’re winning in my mind.
