“On network television, the evening news used to be the big phenomenon. You sit down with everybody at six o’clock or six-thirty and watch the news every evening,” said Mohn. He believes it survived because smaller audiences, shorter newscasts, more lifestyle stories, little international news and a lot of research.

He continued to discuss how local news consists of crimes, fires and extreme weather, as well as the role of commercial radio today.

“In commercial radio, if there are news stations they tend to be short headline news that’s sensational and on commercial talk radio. It’s pretty much the same thing in cable news. Fox News has staked out the right, MSNBC has staked out the left and CNN has staked out the Indian Ocean.”

After his discussion, Mohn participated in a Q & A with a Daniels College of Business Professor, as well as with various members of the audience who had questions for him.
