On May 10, members of the Marketing 2800 honors section came together for a smashing good time as they sought to break the world record for the most people to smash cake into their faces at once. The event was held during the lacrosse tailgate, although the actual cake smash occurred at 11 a.m.

The road to this moment had been nerve-wracking. The fact that May 10 was also Mother’s Day, along with the rainy weather, had put the entire operation in jeopardy. When organizers first arrived at the tailgate, the outlook was questionable.

“When we got to the tailgate, there were probably about five people there. We were wondering whether we should still try to do it or not,” said Malia Bacig, sophomore business major from Arden Hills, Minnesota and one of the event coordinators.

Although attendance was spotty at first, it picked up and by the time the actual cake smash was set to take place. Cake was donated by Safeway and Sodexo and consisted of various smaller cakes and large sheet cakes.

The smash was a success, and the previous record of 120 people was officially broken according to Record Setter, an organization that keeps track of world records, as 125 pieces of cake were smashed at once.

Although the event was centered around fun, cake and school spirit, it was actually conceived as part of a class project by students.

“The honors section of the class is differentiated [from the regular section] by a project that must be completed by the students, although the actual project can be versatile and is chosen by each class,” said Bacig.

“We would be able to break a record, it just seemed like a fun project to take on”

The group hopes to continue the cake smash as a DU tradition.

“It was very fun and a great way to bring DU students together. We would like to make the cake smash an annual tradition, it’s a great way to promote school spirit,” said Bacig.

Overall, the event was a success and hopefully put DU in the books.
